The Orgins of the Internet

In the beginning there was no Internet. Then on the 4th of October 1957, to the worlds surprise that all changed. The Soviet Union launched the worlds first artificial satellite.

The satellite was called Sputnik. It was approximately the size of a beach ball and weighed only 83.6kg. It only took 98 minutes to orbit the Earth. While the Sputnik launch marked the start of the space race age between the U.S.A and the U.S.S.R, it also marked that start of the Internet.

Before the Internet was called the Interent, it was called ARPANET, which stood for: Advanced Research Projects Agency Network.

The reason why the ARPANET was created was to store the United States army and other US departments condifential and private documents, in the event of nuclear attack on US soil. The reason for this thinking was due to the Soviets being able to successfully launch an object into orbit around the Earth. And with the Soviets having the ability to launch that satellite into orbit The public and the US government feared that the Soviets' ability to launch satellites also translated into the capability to launch ballistic missiles that could carry nuclear weapons from Europe to the U.S." The US government wanted a place where they could store any and all information in the event a nuclear bomb/bombs were dropped onto US soil.
